Filming Diary: Cafe Scene (15/02)

After running out of battery and not being able to finish the 'cafe scence' we re-visted Exeter to complet the scene. We thought about what props we wanted to include in the scene before hand allowing the filming to go as planned. Below I will discuss what props I used and why I did so.

Diary: Here we see Hannah writing in her diary and drawing love hearts surrounding the purposely chossen date of 14 the Feb (Valentines Day). The perfered reading of these conventions is that there is a girl, who longs for love. However a negotiated reading could be that she has already found love and is thinking about her lover or waiting for him.

Birdsong novel: Hannah reads this novel connoting an intelligent and romantic persona, highlighting our genre. This foreshadowns the romance that is yet to blossom. We used a POV shot of her reading the book and selected this page specifically as the words relflect the narrative: "her eyes looked up to his". Before perfoming this shot we experimented and practised shooting this shot (pre-lim) which paid off as we have created a very sucessfull shot with lots of meaning.

iPod: Here we see Steve listening to an iPod making our music video relvant to a modern day audience. This also fits in with Steves character as music to him is of great importance. Enigma is also created as the audience may question what he is listening to? Is is something romantic? Does this refect his desir

Prep for filming

I took these three photos of Hannah and Steve in preparation for the 'mirror shot' and 'scrapbook shot'. Reasons for doing this was to capture a personal feeling when our audience watch our video, making the love our protagonists share appear believable. Below is a some personal photo that Hannah and Steve have taken themselves, again adding to realistic value of our film.

When filming on loaction in Exeter we captured a great shot of two birds fyling over Hannah and Steve. This made me instantly think of the current book I am reading, Birdsong. The book is a romantic war novel, however it relates to our music videos narrative well as it too focuses on the beginning of love/infatuation, happiness of love, and loss of love.

There is also a BBC adaptation of the book that I have been watching too. It has given me great inspiration for some shots and editing techniques that I may explore with our music video. Above the BBC trailer is some art work and a theatre poster. This has feed me some ideas about how to constuct my poster and album cover.

I have thought about including some signs and codes into my music video carrying a bird theme. For example a bird duvet & the books Birdsong. This carries connotations of freedom, innocence, natural colours and beauty.

Filming Diary

Above my filming diary are some photo's that I took when on loaction with Steve and Hannah. I edited them using my iPhone 'instagram' app, which has proved very useful when quickly editing digital photos without fuss. It's something I am planning to do throughout the rest of the filming process and I will hopefully end up with a bank of beautiful photgraphs that I may be able to blend into my work, eg. My album cover and magazine advert.

Below this text is a photo of me filming a mid-shot of Hannah on the bus. It proved quite hard to get steady shots because of the movement, however when reviewing the footage back it appears to be steady enough.

Me and Emma are now in the process of editing our existing fottage together to create a taster of the material to come. It will allow is to pick out and know key shots and what editing effects work, and what ones don't.
